Harry Belafonte Center of Social Justice

Harlem, NY

2020

The Bond Center was asked to lead a collaborative effort along with community partners to imagine the future home of the Harry Belafonte Center for Social Justice and the Equitable City in what was formerly the Lincoln Correctional Facility located in Harlem, New York. The design symbolizes an important and meaningful transition from one of incarceration formally associated with the facility to one of Hope, Progress, and Social Justice. The project aspired to redirect taxpayer dollars away from carceral capitalism and toward building meaningful social and cultural capital. The work produced included historical and contextual information and programming for the building based on 5 Pillars: Uplift, Reform, Collaborate, Educate, and Empower, assumed investment toward facility operations under NYS jurisdiction, and the proposed social capital and cultural value of proposed new programming.
